On-Demand Policy

Quick Overview

The On Demand Policy page in zWAN provides a real-time view of policies applied manually to one or more Edge Controllers after onboarding. These policies are triggered on-demand, as needed, rather than being pre-assigned during provisioning. This feature is essential for emergency updates, targeted fixes, or staged rollouts across device groups.

How to Use This Feature in the UI

  1. Navigate to the On Demand Policy section in the zWAN Director UI.
  2. View the list of all policy execution jobs, with each row displaying:
    • Policy Name
    • Status (e.g., Pending, In Progress, Completed)
    • Result (Success/Failed)
    • Node Count – Number of devices the policy was applied to
    • Start Time and End Time for job tracking
  3. To View Job Details:
    • Hover over a policy row until the Details icon appears in the top-right corner.
    • Click the icon to open a detailed breakdown of the policy job, including:
      • Devices targeted
      • Per-device result status
      • Pass/fail counts
  4. To Download Logs:
    • Hover over a policy job and click the Download Log icon.
    • The log file will be downloaded to your local machine for offline analysis.

Concepts & Use Cases

  • On-the-Fly Updates: Apply policies to devices as needed for urgent configuration changes, feature activations, or security updates.
  • Staged Rollouts: Test policies on a subset of devices before full deployment across production environments.
  • Post-Onboarding Enforcement: Apply additional policies after devices are live, ensuring separation between initial provisioning and advanced configurations.
  • Job Tracking and Auditing: Use the interface to monitor policy application status in real time across all target nodes.

Troubleshooting & FAQs

  • Why is a policy job stuck in ‘Pending’?
Ensure the target Edge Controllers are online and reachable. Connectivity issues may prevent job initiation.
  • What does ‘Failed’ mean in the result column?
One or more devices could not execute the policy. Review the downloaded log for specific error messages.
  • Can I re-run a failed job?
You cannot re-run a job from the On Demand Policy page directly. You must trigger a new execution using the relevant policy targeting the affected devices.
  • How are logs formatted?
Logs are typically structured per device with timestamps, status codes, and error details for each execution step.
