Configuring Microsoft Remote Desktop on zTC

Configuring Microsoft Remote Desktop on zTC

Summary

This article walks you through creating, editing, and using Microsoft RDP connection profiles on your zTC, including USB and audio redirection.

Prerequisites

  • zTC with SnapOS ≥1.3
  • Valid RDP server address and credentials
  • (Optional) USB devices to redirect (mass storage, HID, audio peripherals)

Procedure

  1. Add New Profile
    • Start → Applications → Microsoft Remote Desktop
    • Select “Add RDP” → enter server, username, domain → Save & Connect
  2. Edit Existing Profile
    • Open Microsoft Remote Desktop app → right-click desired profile → Edit
  3. USB Redirection
    • In profile Edit → Advanced tab → USB device redirection box → specify id:<VID>:<PID> (e.g., 046d:0825) → Save
  4. Audio Redirection
    • Edit profile → Advanced tab → Audio output mode → select Local or Remote → Save

Example

To share a USB thumb drive at login:
• Connect drive → Edit profile → Basic tab → tick “Share folder” and choose drive letter → Save & Connect

Advanced Configuration

  • Web-based RDP (RD Web Client):
    • Launch Chromium → browse to your RD Web URL → authenticate → launch session
  • Profile Deployment via zMAN:
    • Push RDP .rdp files to device; shortcuts auto-appear on desktop.

Related Features

  • Certificate Installer (to trust RDP host certs)
  • USB Devices List (to obtain VID/PID)
  • SnapOS Update (to keep RDP client current)

Troubleshooting

  • Black screen on connect: ensure “Redirect Audio” isn’t set to “Remote” if server doesn’t support it.
  • USB not appearing: verify VID/PID in Accessories → USB Devices List.
